A day is a budget, not a list

Nobody writes a shopping list without glancing at what is in their wallet. Somehow we all write task lists without glancing at the clock.

Treat the day as a budget instead and four things follow. None of them are clever. All of them are missing from most to-do apps.

One: everything has a price

A task with no length is a purchase with no price tag. You cannot add it up, so you cannot tell whether you can afford the basket.

Start time plus length gives an end time. That is the whole mechanic, and it is the thing a due date cannot do.

Two: the total is the point

Individually every task looks affordable. Of course you can do a forty-five minute thing. The trouble only appears in the sum, and nothing on a normal list ever computes the sum.

Three and a half hours over. Not “you seem busy” — an amount, in hours, with something you can do about it.

Better to know at 8am than to discover it at 4pm.

Three: yesterday’s bills still arrive

Unfinished work does not evaporate at midnight. Most apps re-print it under Today as though it were free, which is how a Wednesday quietly becomes unwinnable.

If it is still work, it still costs hours, and it should still count against today’s total. Overdue tasks do, until you move them or drop them.

Four: you decide what to cut

A budget does not tell you to stop buying coffee. It tells you what the coffee costs, and leaves the rest to you.

So the app will show you the clash and the shortfall. It will not reorder your priorities, decide what matters, or quietly move things to make the numbers look better. Overlaps are named by title and going over is shown in minutes. The next move is yours.

What it does not do

• No score. There is nothing to optimise and nothing to protect.
• No guilt. Overbooking a day is a planning error, not a character flaw, and it is fixed in about ten seconds.
• No silent tidying. Your manual order stays your manual order.

A list cannot run out of room. A day can. Everything else here is downstream of that one sentence.
